Colonial Village, conveniently situated between the Rosslyn and Courthouse Metro stations, sits on 50 acres of red-brick buildings linked by paths that wind among plentiful trees and landscaped lawns. Originally built as a rental complex between 1935 and 1940 to house federal workers, Colonial Village was one of the first garden-style apartment complexes in the United States. In addition, Colonial Village was the first apartment complex back by a loan from the new Federal Housing Authority. In 1977 it was purchased by Mobil Land Development, who eventually converted most of the buildings to condominiums. Today it is split into three condominium associations: 118 buildings that make up Colonial Village I, II, III; 10 co-op and 22 rental buildings. Altogether it comprises about 1,000 units ranging from studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom homes. Many of the Colonial Village buildings are a part of Arlington’s historic district.
The majority of the units are one-bedroom, with a fewer number of studios and two-bedrooms. All units have one bath. The Studio units have a through-the-wall air conditioner; one and two-bedroom units have central air conditioning. There is a laundry room in each “pod” of buildings; no clothes washers or dryers are permitted in individual units, though the community is pet friendly!
Colonial Village I has a permit-only parking lot with 74 spaces, available on a first-come, first-served basis. No more than one parking permit is issued for each unit. For the remainder of owners/renters, there is a significant amount of street parking.
Its location and campus-like setting make Colonial Village a favorite neighborhood among locals. Colonial Village’s short walk distance from offices, restaurants, bars and shops make this community a great value for 1- and 2-bedroom condominiums.
Colonial Village is served by WMATA and Arlington ART buses. Its boundaries are Lee Highway to the north, North Quinn Street to the east, Wilson Boulevard to the south and North Veitch Street to the west.
