Yorktown

Website: http://www.yorktowncivic.com

The Yorktown neighborhood is located north of Lee Highway in the area of the intersections with George Mason Boulevard and Harrison Street (see our association map on our Membership page). It is a vibrant residential neighborhood with over 1000 homes of steadily increasing property value.

The neighborhood is also home to Yorktown High School, which educates over 1600 of Arlington's finest young men and women. Yorktown High is a public school which has won national awards and consistently ranks among the top ten high schools in the entire Washington, D.C. area. Construction on a major addition to Yorktown High is scheduled to begin in mid-2003, with a complete renovation of the school expected in the years ahead.

While the neighborhood is primarily residential in focus, there is no shortage of fine shopping and dining opportunities within the neighborhood -- all within walking distance for most of our residents. The Lee Harrison Shopping Center boast a new Harris-Teeter grocery and several new restaurants and other shops. Another major grocer, Safeway, also is located in the neighborhood.

The Yorktown neighborhood also boasts 3 parks: Greenbrier, Chestnut Hills and Rock Spring.

  • Greenbrier Park is located next to Yorktown High and hosts the school's athletic fields and an indoor public swimming pool. Children from throughout Arlington come to Greenbrier Park to play games for a number of youth sports leagues. Planning money for improvements to Greenbrier Park was approved by Arlington voters in 2002, and the fields at Greenbrier are scheduled for renovation during the next couple of years.
  • Chestnut Hills Park, located on N. Harrison Street, is a neighborhood park that primarily caters to families with small children. The recent addition of a new playground section has made this park a favorite among north-Arlington families. The County has also acquired additional property adjacent to this park and is expected to begin a master planning process for use of this property in the future.
  • Rock Spring Park, located at the north end of George Mason Boulevard, is one of the neighborhoods best kept secrets. It boasts beautiful gardens maintained by the Rock Spring Garden Club and walking trails.

The neighborhood is also home to a large chapter of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, and the Cornerstone Wesleyan Church.
